Do you know someone like Lacey who talks nonstop and doesn’t pause to listen? Friends take turns talking and listening in order to get to know each other. When we take time to hear what others have to say, we begin to build a relationship with them. Just like Lacey did in the story.

Communication involves listening as well as talking. Another way to communicate is through writing. When you are writing instructions for someone it is important to be clear and follow a step by step process so that your message is understood.

In this Social Emotional Learning STEM Activity, students create directions to build something out of plastic bricks.

Students focus on the importance of listening and proper communication to relationship skills through a mindful moments strategy, activity, and writing prompt.

CASEL Framework: Relationship Skills

This activity is a part of a series of STEM resources designed to follow the CASEL Framework for social emotional learning.

The abilities to establish and maintain healthy and supportive relationships and to effectively navigate settings with diverse individuals and groups.

This includes the capacities to communicate clearly, listen actively, cooperate, work collaboratively to problem solve and negotiate conflict constructively, navigate settings with differing social and cultural demands and opportunities, provide leadership, and seek or offer help when needed.
