Teach Force and Motion, Pushes and pulls, and Surfaces and direction with this Kindergarten STEM Activity!

In the story, Newton and Me, the boy and his dog explore all sorts of things that move. They figure out what makes things move fast or slow when they push and pull different objects.

In this STEM Challenge, students conduct a group investigation to see if they can use what they know about different surfaces to change the speed of an object. Students then design and build something to change the direction of an object.

This STEM Challenge aligns to NGSS Engineering Standards for Kindergarten, but can be used in 1st grade.

Material List:

  • Newton and Me by Lynne Mayer
  • Balls (ping pong balls or large pom-poms are recommended)
  • Wooden Blocks, Dominoes, Math Manipulatives, Building Bricks, etc.
