Create a well-organized substitute teacher binder!

Ensure a smooth day for your students and support your substitute with the tools they need to succeed. This STEM Sub Binder includes everything you need to have sub plans ready to go all school year.

Includes:

  • Binder spine labels
  • Editable Canva template
  • Schedule pages
  • Student roster pages
  • Notes pages
  • Student login information pages
  • Class procedures pages
  • Classroom rules pages
  • Seating chart
  • Behavior report chart
  • Color and black and white versions of everything

This guide takes you through the steps to get everything set up for your binder.

Step 1: Choose Your Binder

  • Use a 1" or 1.5" binder with a clear cover pocket for a customized cover page.
  • Label the spine with your name, grade level, and "Substitute Binder."

Step 2: Print the Core Documents

  • Print and organize essential pages.
  • Use the Canva template to personalize pages to fit your needs.

Step 3: Personalize It

Make it yours by including materials specific to your classroom or school:

  • Behavior management strategies or class incentive systems (e.g., ClassDojo, clip charts, punch cards)
  • Passwords or login cards for digital tools (if applicable and safe to share)
  • Dismissal procedures (walkers, bus riders, parent pickup, etc.)
  • Names and roles of student helpers (line leaders, tech helpers, etc.)
  • School map (especially helpful for specials, nurse, or restrooms)
  • Copies of class or school rules
  • School-wide behavior expectations or PBIS info
  • Extra activities or time-fillers (early finisher activities, read-aloud ideas)

Step 4: Assemble and Store

  • Use the labeled tabs for easy navigation.
  • Store the binder in an easy-to-see spot (e.g., teacher desk, emergency bin, labeled shelf).
  • Consider using a plastic envelope or zipper pouch to hold things like pencils, hall passes, stickers, or blank nurse forms.

Keep It Updated

Make it a habit to review your binder monthly or at the start of each term. Update:

  • Student lists and seating charts
  • Any changes to the schedule or routines
  • Emergency contacts or procedures
