Build early math confidence with these Five Little Ducks preschool counting activities.
This playful Pre-K counting lesson helps little learners practice rote counting and writing numbers 1–10 using hands-on duck manipulatives and simple recording pages.
Perfect for preschool and Pre-K math centers, small groups, or circle-time extensions, this low-prep resource pairs perfectly with any version of Five Little Ducks or works as a stand-alone counting lesson.
What Students Do
- Listen to or sing Five Little Ducks (any version) and talk about how many ducks are on the pond and how many go away.
- Use pond counting cards with empty circles and small plastic ducks to place one duck in each space, touch-counting aloud to match quantities from 1–10.
- Write the matching numeral on the number line next to each pond, then check their work by counting again.
- Follow picture direction cards (look → place → count → write) so even non-readers can work more independently.
- Extend learning with dot-to-dot duck pages (with and without numbers 1–20) to build number order and fine motor control, then color their ducks.
- Draw their thinking on a “Draw what you discovered” reflection page, showing what happened in the pond.
What’s Included
- Teacher instructions with materials list, step-by-step directions, movement song link, and ideas for checking and rotating cards 1–10.
- Clickable link to Canva lesson slides to introduce the challenge and support whole-group modeling.

- Student challenge letter that explains the task in kid-friendly language (“Your job is to help count the ducks carefully…”).
- “Draw what you discovered” reflection page and two connect-the-dots duck worksheets (one with numbered dots 1–20 and one with plain dots).
